Photo Insights is an AI-powered feature that helps you uncover unexpected details about your historical family photos. By analyzing the image itself alongside any historical context from your tree, Photo Insights can suggest estimated dates, locations, and fascinating background details to help bring your ancestors' stories to life.

Eligibility and access

  • Subscription required: This feature is available to all Ancestry® subscribers.

  • Global availability: You can access Photo Insights from anywhere.

  • Supported platforms: Available on both the Ancestry website (desktop) and the Ancestry mobile app (iOS and Android).

How it works

When you request insights, Ancestry uses advanced AI technology to analyze the visual components of your photo. If you have already attached individuals to the photo, the tool securely reviews their basic life events (such as birth, marriage, and death dates and locations) to provide highly relevant context.

The feature generates three types of insights:

  • Suggested dates: Visual clues and historical data are combined to estimate when the photo was taken.

  • Suggested locations: The tool analyzes backgrounds, architecture, and clothing to suggest where the photo was snapped.

  • Historical details: Interesting, bite-sized historical facts are generated about the elements discovered in your photo.

How to discover insights

To generate insights, you must be the owner or an editor of the family tree where the photo is uploaded.

On a computer (web)

  1. Go to your tree and open the photo you want to analyze.
  2. In the side panel on the right side of the screen, click Discover insights.
  3. Wait up to 10 to 15 seconds for the AI to process the image and generate your results.

On the Ancestry app

  1. Open the Ancestry app and tap on the photo you wish to view.
  2. Look under the Details section below the image.
  3. Tap Discover insights.
  4. Wait up to 10 to 15 seconds for your insights to load.

Accepting and managing insights

Once your insights generate, you can choose to review and save them to your photo's metadata.

  • Accepting dates & locations: If you like a suggestion, click or tap Accept. This will save the information to your photo.

  • AI indicators: To maintain historical accuracy for all users on Ancestry, accepted insights will permanently display an AI Insight indicator alongside the supporting context text, letting future viewers know this information was discovered via AI.

  • Removing information: If you change your mind, saved insights can be deleted or changed at any time just like any other piece of photo metadata.

  • Visibility: Anyone who has permission to view your photo will also be able to see any insights you have chosen to accept and save.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Ancestry use my family photos to train AI?

No. Ancestry values your privacy and does not use your private family photos to train AI models.

Why does it take 10 to 15 seconds to load?

Our systems securely process both the image pixels and your tree context in real time to provide accurate, personalized details rather than generic automated tags.

Why did the insights change when I checked the photo again?

Insights are generated dynamically on demand. If you update your ancestor's life events (like adding a specific death location or birth year) and run the tool again in a later session, the AI will use that updated information to provide even sharper, more accurate details. If you see an insight you love, be sure to click Accept to permanently save it.
