• The count for the 1800 census began on August 4, 1800 and lasted nine months.
• 5,308,483 people were counted.
• The census included 16 states and the territories northwest of the Ohio River, Indiana, and Mississippi.
• Kentucky and Tennessee were new states.
• Records were lost from Georgia, Indiana Territory, Kentucky, Mississippi Territory, New Jersey, Northwest Territory, Virginia, Tennessee, and the District of Columbia. However, some of the schedules for these areas have been recreated using tax lists and other records.
• The census includes inhabitants from the District of Columbia, but they’re found under Virginia and Maryland. The Virginia records were lost, but records from Maryland are available.
