Ancestry’s collection of historic newspapers contains archives of about 1,500 large and small newspapers.
 

Search newspapers (Or click the Search tab > select Card Catalog > select Newspapers & Periodicals > select Newspapers.)
 

1. Under Filter By Location, select a country or region. If you’d like, narrow the region further under Filter By Location again by clicking another region.
2. In the Keywords field in the top-left corner, enter a keyword (like "Gazette," "index," or "obituary," for example) and click Search.
3. Either click Search entire “Newspapers” Category or select a specific newspaper from the list.
4. Enter search information and click Search.

Search tips

• If you’re looking for information about people who lived in a small town, search for newspapers in larger towns nearby.
• When looking for information about a specific event, search the dates around the event as well as the event date itself.
• To uncover news stories about your ancestors’ family, search both for direct ancestors and for their siblings and cousins as well.
• Obituaries sometimes ran in newspapers of towns where people formerly lived, as well as in papers of towns where they lived at their times of death. When a death notice contains the phrase “[location] papers please copy” (as in, “Philadelphia and Minneapolis papers please copy”), look for more news about your family members in those papers.
• Around the time of a wedding, search for engagement notices, notices about bridal showers, and (depending on the size of the town) articles about the wedding and honeymoon.
• To account for spelling variations or mistakes, search using wild cards.
