Our Origins 2025 update delivers 68 new and updated European regions, giving you our most detailed view of your ancestral regions yet.

In the past, we provided subregions that showed smaller, more specific areas your DNA connects you to. It worked by matching short segments of your DNA to people whose families have deep roots in those places. When subregions were created, our main ancestral regions reference panel wasn't yet detailed enough to capture that information on its own, so this extra layer filled the gap.

Now, with advances in our reference panel and the continued growth of our DNA database, we can provide that same level of detail directly within your ancestral regions. These updated regions cover or replace many of the areas once shown as subregions, so no information is lost. You’ll see more precise region assignments and percentages, offering deeper insight into where your ancestors lived long ago.

Thanks to these improvements, we have retired subregions.
