Adding a divorce to a family tree

  1. Add one member of the divorced couple to your tree if they're not already there. If both people are already in the tree, skip to step 5.
  2. Click on the member of the divorced couple who's already in your tree.
  3. In the opened card, click More options dots(the three horizontal dots), select +Add relative and choose Spouse.
  4. Enter the spouse's information, change their Relationship to Other, and click Save.
  5. In your tree, click on either member of the divorced couple.
  6. In the opened card, click Profile.
  7. On the Facts tab of their profile page, in the Timeline column, click +Add.
  8. Click the drop-down menu and select Divorce.
  9. Enter the date of the divorce and select the date from the drop-down menu.
  10. Confirm or change the spouse listed.
    • If the spouse is correct, click Add.
    • If the spouse is incorrect, click Change Spouse, enter their name, select it when it appears, and then click Add.
  11. The divorce will now be listed on the profile pages of each ex-spouse.
    • In the vertical tree view, find one of the ex-spouses, click the horizontal lines (top-left of their photo), and choose which spouse(s) you'd like to see.

 

Finding divorce records


Go to marriage and divorce records and skip to step 4.

  1. From any page on Ancestry, click the Search tab and select Card Catalog.
  2. Under Filters on the left, click Birth, Marriage & Death, then Marriage & Divorce.
  3. Continue using the filters on the side to narrow down the location and date of the records you want to search.
  4. From the list of results, choose a collection or database type.
  5. On the search page, enter information and click Search.
  6. From your list of search results, click View Record to see a record.
